Blog Tasks: Daily Mirror case study language and representation

1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):

Masthead: the title block of the newspaper 
Pug: something to catch readers eye
Splash Head: the lead story 
Slogan: sums up the ethos of newspaper 
Dateline: date newspaper was published 
Byline: gives name pf writer 
Standfirst:  introductory paragraph usually in bold

2) What is the main story on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the story is about.

3) What is the 'pug' or smaller celebrity story on the front cover? Why might it appeal to Daily Mirror readers?

4) Why is the choice of news stories, content and page design on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?

because there is a lot of images and small text

5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

the front page 3 headlines , 5 images and 3 pieces of text , 2 headlines.

1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied? labour party

2) How does the Daily Mirror represent the Post Office in the CSP pages? Why do you think they present them in this way?
they present the post office as unfair and biased they present them to get more people to create action and to generate more customer

3) How is Fujitsu represented in the Daily Mirror CSP pages? Look particularly at the use of images on the front cover and the section on Fujitsu on the inside page. 
fujitsu is represented as irresponsible and childlike

4) How are the Conservative Party represented in the Daily Mirror? 
 the conservative party is represented in the daily mirror as a bad  party and the daily mirror do not like then.


5) Read the main articles on the inside pages. How are different people, groups and organisations represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media? reinforces innocent and sympathy giving stereotypes

Tatler: case study blog tasks

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine? 2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader? 3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend? 4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?
